What is Acrylic?

Acrylic, also known as Plexiglass, Lucite, Perspex, or Polymethylmethacrylate—is a versatile, tough plastic that's popular among retailers for point-of-sale displays. It offers the clarity and elegance of glass but with better durability, lighter weight, and excellent UV resistance. Its versatility makes it easy to customize as well as ideal for high-traffic retail spaces.

Advantages of Acrylic

Acrylic has several qualities that make it a top choice for sign holders and retail displays, including:

  • Clarity - Offers excellent optical clarity, similar to glass, making it ideal for showcasing products.
  • Lightweight – Much lighter material than glass, making it easier to handle, ship, and install.
  • Durability - Strong and impact-resistant, reducing the risk of breakage in high-traffic areas.
  • Customizable - Easy to cut, bend, glue, engrave, and print on
  • Weather-Resistant – Acrylic holds up well to UV and moisture, making it suitable for indoor and outdoor use.
  • UV Resistant – Certain types of acrylic are resistant to yellowing and degradation from sunlight.
  • Thermoformable – Can be heated and molded into complex shapes without losing clarity.
  • Easy To Maintain – Simple to clean with a soft cloth or soap and water
  • Recyclable – Acrylic can be recycled and reused in various applications.
  • Non-Toxic – Safe for use in environments like food service, healthcare, and education.
  • Cost-Effective – More affordable than glass or metal in many applications, especially when considering long-term durability.

Acrylic Processing

At VKF Renzel, creating high-quality acrylic displays starts with precise and skilled fabrication. We shape materials using CNC machines, precision laser cutters, and vacuum forming to mold the acrylic. We follow with careful hand-finishing techniques like heat bending, gluing, and polishing to achieve a clean and professional look.

Printing and Laser Engraving on Acrylic

Before being shaped into its final form, acrylic can be printed on using a variety of techniques, including pad printing, digital printing, and screen printing. Acrylic is also well-suited for laser engraving, offering a clean, refined look, especially when paired with LED lighting. The illumination brings the engraved elements to life, creating a striking, modern look.

Other Processing Methods for Acrylic

Other ways that acrylic can be processed in order to give it a unique custom look is through methods such as plotter foil and vacuum forming.

Vinyl stamping is a technique where metallic or colored foil is applied to a surface using heat and pressure, creating a shiny, reflective finish. Often used to highlight text or design elements, the foil is cut with precision using a plotter machine and then transferred onto the acrylic, giving signs and displays a clean, high-end appearance. Vacuum forming is a method used to mold acrylic sheets into custom shapes. The sheet is heated until pliable, then placed over a mold while a vacuum pulls it snugly into place, capturing every detail of the form. This method is how we create products like our Display Spheres.
